The moments a mother shares with her child during breastfeeding are unique and intimate. However, for many mothers, breastfeeding can be a source of stress, discomfort, and worry.
Breastfeeding is the natural feeding preference of the newborn, but various factors can make it challenging for some. These challenges can affect a mother’s self-esteem and bonding with her baby and, in some cases, contribute to feelings of distress.
While many mothers may feel disheartened if breastfeeding is difficult, there are ways in which osteopathic care may support both mother and baby in addressing some of the factors that could impact breastfeeding.
For baby:
- Latching difficulties: Restrictions through the neck and jaw, which can sometimes be associated with the birth process, may affect a baby’s ability to latch properly. This could lead to discomfort during feeding. An osteopath can assess and, where appropriate, provide gentle treatment to address these restrictions, potentially making latching more comfortable for the baby.
- Lip and tongue ties: These naturally occurring variations can impact breastfeeding. An osteopath can assess for these oral variations and, where suitable, may suggest treatment or refer you to a specialist if further intervention is needed.
- Discomfort from colic, wind, or reflux: These issues can sometimes be linked to tension through the neck, ribs, or lower spine. Osteopathic treatment may help alleviate these tensions, potentially making feeding more comfortable for your baby.
For mum:
- Positioning and latch: Finding a comfortable position for both mother and baby is crucial for successful breastfeeding. An osteopath can offer advice on positioning and latching, and may provide treatment to relieve any discomfort or restrictions affecting your upper body.
- Mastitis: This painful condition can occur when milk ducts become blocked. Osteopaths may assist in managing symptoms by addressing tension in the chest and upper spine, supporting better fluid flow through the breast.
- Stress and well-being: Stress and anxiety can impact a mother’s overall well-being. Osteopathic care may include supporting your nervous system and helping you feel more relaxed and balanced during this important time.
- Breastfeeding can be a beautiful and rewarding experience, though challenges may arise. With support and guidance, including from your osteopath, you may find greater comfort and confidence in your breastfeeding journey.
